Common Name: Fresh Flannel Flower

Scientific Name: Actinotus helianthi

Life Cycle: Perennial

Special Seeds: These are wild harvested flannel flowers from the lovely Brooke at Waratah Farm in NSW. The seeds come with NSW National Parks certification and because they are wild fresh seeds they have a great germination rate around 60% which is good for flannel flower. The packets come with extra seeds to compensate for this. These come in a pack with smoked vermiculite to aid in the germination process. The packs come with planting instructions.

Remarks: An iconic Australian native wildflower endemic to NSW. Much sought after in the cut flower, florist industry and an absolute joy to have in the garden at home. Flowers are cream, white, grey and have a flannel like texture. Our seed is fresh and best used within 6mths. Plants can handle light frosts. Likes well draining soil. Flowers spring to autumn.

I’ve been hunting for this beauty for around 2 years and unfortunately these amazing Australian wildflowers are becoming harder and harder to source.

Can be grown in pots, but need to be very well draining pots.

Plant Height: 50cm

When: Spring + Autumn, can be sown all year round in warmer climates.

Sowing Depth + Method: Smoke treatment is recommended as it will encourage germination, germination will happen naturally after a bush fire occurs in the wild. This can be done by using pre treated smoke granules from your local nursery. Surface sow, cover lightly with soil not to bury too deep. Take care when transplanting as flannel flower seedlings do not like having their roots disturbed, as they have a long tap root. They like damp but not too wet conditions.

Spacing: 20cm

Position: Full Sun / Part Shade

Days until germination: 3-5 weeks at around 20 degrees, germination can be unreliable, hence fresh seed is best and best sown within 6mths. Seed will not germinate if temps are over 30 degrees.

Please note, Australian native seeds can take longer to germinate, please be patient and do not discard too early.

Approx Number of Seeds: 50 Seeds have had their husk removed to improve germination rates.

Note: WA orders are sent weekly as they require quarantine inspections on arrival to WA
