Remarks: Despite the name the Irish Poet Tassel flower is not native to Ireland.
The origin of this lovely pompon tassel like flower is thought to be middle eastern. Loved as an easy to cultivate cottage garden flower blooming in hues of orange and coral reds the tassel flower is a charming in wildflower gardens and as filler or colour pop in floral arrangements.
Plant Height: 45cm - 60cm
When: Spring to early Summer after the last frost. In warmer climates, it can also be sown in autumn.
Sowing Depth + Method: Sow thinly on the surface or cover lightly with a fine layer of soil or vermiculite, around 2 mm deep.
Needs light to germinate - do not bury the seeds too deeply. Sow directly into garden beds or start indoors in trays.
Spacing: 15–20 cm apart to allow for airflow and bushy growth.
Position: Full sun with well-drained soil.
Days until germination: 7-14 days @ 18-24°C
Seed to Bloom: Approx 8–10 weeks. Flowers continuously throughout summer into early autumn with regular deadheading.
Harvest: When the blooms are fully open but still fresh.
For best vase life, pick in the morning when the flowers are hydrated and cool.
Regular deadheading ensures continuous blooms throughout the season.
