8 Summer Gardening Tips

  • Water first thing in the morning at the base of the plant, watering the actual plant can cause disease to occur.
  • Drip irrigation helps save water as will water the actual plants not the surroundings like sprinklers do.
  • Mulching around your plants with something similar to sugar cane will help keep moisture in and plants cool.
  • Grow low maintenance plants that do not require a lot of water once established, some examples of these can be Australian natives and annuals like cosmos.
  • Some flowers and veggies may scorch in the midday sun, to help those plants cope make a makeshift shade tent with some old shade cloth / hessian and attach to some posts.
  • If growing young seedlings in the greenhouse then keep a close eye on them, they will likely need watering twice a day... and can fry to the point of no return very quickly.
  • Keep water up to any plants that are potted, especially terracotta, as it has a tendency to dry out quicker than plastic pots.
  • Make sure when planting out seedlings not to overcrowd, keeping airflow between plants will help avoid diseases in late summer, like powdery mildew.
