10 Spring Sowing Tips
- Start with using the best quality potting mix you can afford, this will help give your seedlings the best start to life!
- Raise your seeds as seedlings in a greenhouse like environment rather than direct sowing. from seedlings - a windowsill often does not have all day sun and will make your seedlings get leggy and there isn't enough sunlight. (large seeds such as beans and corn will do best direct sown).
- Make sure the variety you are sowing is being sown in the correct season. Check “when” on the packaging to make sure you are good to go!
- Check packaging to see if the seed needs light or darkness to germinate.
- Teeny tiny seeds such as snapdragons and poppies should be water from underneath or with a mister to prevent seeds getting washed away or dislodged too far down in the soil.
- sprinkle of vermiculite over my freshly sown seeds, this helps keep the soil moist and helps prevent mould.
- Label your work :) then when it comes to planting out you will know what variety it is and where to place it in the garden.
- Lastly, don’t rush the seedlings straight from the greenhouse into the ground… this is when transplant shock can occur. Slowly harden them off to the outside world by putting them outside for 1hr a day, building up to 6hrs over a week.
